Google Mania
Last week, I pointed out a tidbit about Google Alerts. Another cool article to read by Heather von Doehren , that really breaks down the basics of RSS Feeds is Why Writers Need to Subscribe to RSS Feeds.
One of the RSS Feed Readers she mentions is Google Reader. Let me tell you, I LOVE Google Reader. Reading RSS Feeds can be just as addictive as reading email, but even better. Why? Well it’s just pure reading. Soaking up good info.
Here’s a peek at my feeds in Google Reader.
Usually in the morning I scan the headlines from my iGoogle page (yes I have a definite obsession with Google – doesn’t everybody?) and any blog post titles that look interesting, I will read if I have time. If I don’t have time. I will “star” it for later reading. Many times, I will “Mark All as Read” for the ones I’m not really interested in ever reading for one reason or another.
It can get ugly sometime with the number of posts that come through, but I like the simplicity and ability to read all my favorite blogs in one place. Being the organizational nerd that I am, I make good use of the categories or what Google Reader calls “labels”.
For example, some of my labels (and some of the blogs stored within the label) are:
- Agents
BookEnds, LLC — A Literary Agency
Chip MacGregor .com - Mystery-Suspense
Craftie Ladies of Suspense
Forensics & Faith
Keep Me In Suspense
Suspense Novelist - Publishers
CBA Industry Blog
Zondervan Blog - Writers
Advanced Fiction Writing Blog
Story Sensei
So basically instead of keeping all these blogs as bookmarks – which I have way too many of anyway – I just keep up with the RSS Feeds or blogs posts through Google Reader.
Check it out. Oh yeah and don’t forget to read Why Writers Need to Subscribe to RSS Feeds.

I’ve since started using the NewsGator plugin with Outlook 2007. I not sure I’m thrilled with it’s performance. I like the user-friendly interface but I subscribe to over 30 RSS feeds, and it seems to bog down the overall performance of Outlook. Granted I have five different email accounts all dumping into Outlook, so a send and receive takes a while anyway.
So, I’ve been thinking about switching over to Google Reader too.
