Are You Reading Outside The Box?

If you are not African American (AA), do you read books with predominantly AA or multicultural characters? If so, which book appealed to you an why?
I have my thoughts about the publishing industry and Christian Fiction in general. I posted some of those thoughts in a column for Christian Fiction Online Magazine.

Manuscript Update: I have finished my first manuscript, When Rain Falls. It took me 2 and 1/2 years to really understand the story that started as a very intense scene with a little girl in the back of a police car.
I will be posting more about my process in a monthly column for another blog (not mine, I know I have a lot of blogs – LOL!).
For the remainder of November, I will revise the final draft of my cozy mystery. I’m also cranking out the rough draft for the second book in this cozy mystery series via the popular NANOWRIMO event. Hope to post my word count progress this week, which right now, isn’t very impressive.

Great article and definitely thought-provoking. I think it is going to take one book, one writer, one character at a time. I have a multicultural character and multicultural romance in my next cozy that releases next spring. I didn’t do that deliberately. This is how the character came to me, and she fought for her life, since she was the original murder victim. We’ll see what happens. I realize I may catch flak either way–either people might disagree with the relationship, or some may think she doesn’t seem different enough. But she’s there!

Thanks for reading the article Lynette! I’m looking forward to reading your cozies. My cozy mystery has an African American woman and a Caucasian woman as best friends, so I really try to stretch my writing to include a wide audience of readers. We will see what happens during my submission process next year.

You know, Tyra, I have been guilty of passing up books, just because of their covers. You have inspired me to grab one that I might not ordinarily go for and read it. I’ll take your list of suggested titles from your article with me the next time and see what I can find!
