Decorating Schemes

“Decorating Schemes” is the second book in the Deadly Decor Mystery series. I’ve read good reviews about Ginny Aiken’s books so this series has been on my reading list for awhile. Haley Farrell is an interior decorator who manages to stumble into trouble. In the first book in this series, “Design on a Crime”, Haley finds a dead body and becomes a prime suspect in the murder case. After making it through that ordeal, Haley soon finds herself facing another one.
While visiting in a client’s home, Haley stumbles upon the body of a teenager. While this time, there is no evidence tying her to the crime, there is someone close who is a prime suspect. The tables have turned as now Dutch Merrill, the contractor must face the same humiliation Haley suffered. The dead girl’s father happens to be Dutch’s former business partner. The two men clashed badly over a business decision which left them both bitter. Was Dutch bitter enough to kill his former business partner’s daughter – the same girl who was his goddaughter?
With his integrity on the line, now Dutch seeks out support from Haley. Funny, when Haley was going through this same ordeal, Dutch was her main acuser. Growing in her faith as well as attraction to Dutch, Haley decides to put her curiosity to work. Along the way as she digs, Haley must deal with her own personal issues, trusting God to help her work them out as well as prove Dutch’s innocence.
I did not read the first book in this series, but I felt pretty comfortable with starting with the second book. The author refers back to situations that occurred earlier and manages to tie them all together smoothly. I have read several mystery/suspense novels over the years, my favorite are those which don’t necessarily involve the main character as a cop or private detective. I like when the character is normal everyday person with a determination to see justice done. Like any novel, you know the heroine is going to eventually crack the case. Haley’s sensitivity and determination to find out the truth makes this a real page-turner.
What makes one mystery book better than the other is whether or not the reader can guess “who-dunnit”. The reader will be surprised when the murderer is revealed! With the third book “Interior Motives” coming out soon, I definitely want to catch up on the full series.
