Pink is the first novel in Marilynn Griffith’s SHADES OF STYLES series. Meet Raya Joseph, the head designer at Garments of Praise. After her hopes of walking down the aisle have been crushed, Raya has adjusted to life outside the family business, designing uniforms and choir robes. Not only has Raya been crushed by her cancelled wedding plans, but she is struggling with her faith. A chance encounter on a train brings Raya in contact with personal trainer, Flex Durham.
Flex like Raya is also trying to move on from cancelled wedding plans. While tentative about starting a new relationship, the attraction between Raya and Flex is obvious from the first moment they lay eyes on each other. Through several chance meetings and matchmaking friends, the attraction becomes harder to resist. With Flex helping Raya get into shape, they definitely aren’t avoiding each other.
Despite Raya’s newfound happiness, someone unpleasant from her past is wreaking havoc – yet again. Megan unscrupulously stole Raya’s fiance, now she seems to want to cause Raya more heartache. In a surprise move, Megan asks Raya to design her wedding dress. With Garments of Praise in trouble financially, the pressure is on for Raya to design the million dollar dress. Soon unresolved issues from both Raya and Flex’s past will come back full circle as secrets are revealed.
I loved this couple! I loved their uniqueness, especially Raya’s. As a fashion designer, her character was very believable. With a fashion designer and a personal trainer as main characters, Marilynn Griffith opened the world of Christian fiction to more diversity. Many of the books I have read seemed to have the main character in a “safe” role or career.
While romance was definitely in the air, the author weaves in several other relationship issues such as nonmarital sex and AIDS. Both Raya and Flex, have had to make a new start with learning to be celibate. In the novel it was alarming to read the number of people affected by AIDS. I think the “alarm” will remind readers that AIDS is definitely not to be ignored especially in the African American community and abroad in Africa.
I think the reader will walk away with a sense of how important it is to deal with unresolved issues from our past. It is impossible to grow in your faith or break free from the past if you don’t address what has caused you pain.
In Pink we were introduced to other Garment of Praise employees. The second book, Jade in the SHADES OF STYLE series is due out in June. This book will focus on Lily Chau. I found her character to be intriguing in Pink so I’m looking forward to seeing her character expanded in Jade. Marilynn Griffith is sure to bring a larger group of fans to Christian fiction with her unique, multicultural series.
