Why Fiction?

A few years ago I mentioned my desire to write a book to somebody. The response was rather discouraging. Her response was, “There are so many books in the world, what could you write about?” The comment discouraged me because I had no clue. I always had an idea I would pursue nonfiction. My writings over the past eight years have been largely devotions, bible studies and book reviews.
As a book reviewer, I often choose to review fiction before nonfiction. This is mainly because so many nonfiction book subjects resemble each other. I’m not sure if publishers jump on a band wagon and they all release books with similar subject matters or what the case maybe, but I tend choose nonfiction titles with caution. Which sent me back to the question, well what in the world would I write about?
A few months ago, while talking to an email buddy, we had a discussion about fiction. Afterwards I started thinking could I write fiction. Could I write a storyline that stretched into a book? A little daunted, I dug up old short stories from college. The stories were not that great, but they reminded me I could put my overactive imagination to use.
I started reading Christian fiction around 1999. The market has grown in leaps and bounds since then. The genre’s seem to expand every year as well. My favorite genres are mystery and suspense. I read in a couple of places, you should write what you like to read. So, my first draft is wobbling between a mystery and suspense. There is a difference. As I continue, I guess it will become more apparent. At least, I hope so.
Interestingly, it was not until I started spending time writing fiction, that I started to find a focus for a nonfiction book. This past weekend, I started an outline and will pick back up a study I started earlier this year in The Gospels.
Whew! Here I go…
