BOOK REVIEW | Violet Dawn

Brandilyn Collins is back with a whole new “seatbelt suspense” series. The first book in the Kanner Lake series is Violet Dawn. Brandilyn wastes no time kicking in the suspense factor with the first chapter as readers are introduced to Paige Williams. Paige is new to Kanner Lake and struggling immensely with loneliness. As she ponders the possibilities of future friendships, she meets something far more sinister in her hot tub. Unfortunately, the last thing Paige needs in her life is more trouble. Determined to keep her new life in Kanner Lake, she makes a decision that places her in “hot water” with the police and an assassin.
The fictional Kanner Lake is a small town set in northern Idaho. In the heart of the town is the Java Joint coffee shop owned by Bailey Truitt. Bailey’s smiling face and demeanor lights up the coffee shop for her customers, but her home life has become draining. Bailey is one of many town folks readers will meet from this colorful, but quaint town. Beyond the camaraderie are deep individual issues that are very contemporary and relatable. Kanner Lake is a three book series so readers will have the opportunity to learn more about each character.
As a lover of suspense novels, Brandilyn’s Hidden Faces series catapulted her to one of my favorite authors over the past year. She definitely took it up a knotch with Violet Dawn. The writing is superb and this book was the perfect example of a page turner. You definitely don’t want to start reading this book at bedtime, your mind will be so focused on the action, sleep becomes unimportant.
What I especially like was Brandilyn’s flawless timing. Of course, the suspense scenes were intense like any good suspense thriller should. In this particular novel, I found the pace of the character development and backstory right on target, not too slow and not too fast. By the time I completed the novel, I had a desire to know more about certain character and how they would pull through the issues that invaded his/her life. The Christian faith is subtlety introduced in this novel through prayer warriors like Bailey and the deep sense of belonging that drives Paige. God makes his entrance by gently tapping on the doors of the brokenhearted.
I encourage you to check out Violet Dawn and be on the lookout for the second book in the Kanner Lake series, Coral Moon in March 2007. Readers actually have the unique opportunity of connecting with the characters on the fictional blog, Scenes and Beans. This seems to be a successful experiment that has received quite a bit of buzz.
