by Lori Copeland

It’s that time of the year again and Rose is already exhausted.  Baking, decorating, charity work and church services keep Rose on the go. Rose is on the go so often, her own family is feeling neglected. Ready for a home cooked meal for a change and missing Rose’s support, her husband and children express their frustrations.

Still, Rose being a well-meaning Christian and afraid to say no, continues making longer to-do lists. After all this time of year is really about serving others.  When several friends and church members are in need of prayer, Rose finds despite all her service, she’s feels inadequate with truly reaching out to others in need. Rose will learn a valuable lesson in the midst of her busyness when God steps in the middle of her Christmas activities.

I have to admit, I found myself relating to Rose. It’s real easy to get busy this time of the year. While we should give our time and resources all year round, the spirit of Christmas motivates folks to do more than usual.  People can get so caught up in the doing, they forget the true meaning.

Instead what we need to be doing, is taking the time to sit at the feet of Jesus, the one who we celebrate. All our work is in vain if we don’t have a relationship with God through his son. Unwrapping Christmas also teaches us about the importance of not ignoring our families in lieu of a church work. Our priorities should include God first, family second and everything else ordered after.

I don’t often read novellas, but I enjoyed this one. Information about Advent is included throughout the book. It’s only 157 pages, and I found it to be an inspiring reminder about the real reason for the season.
