My Top Ten Reads for 2007

Okay, it’s New Year’s Eve. I’m personally looking forward to 2008. I love this time of the year. Not only for the holidays, but also for the time of reflection. I can’t say I accomplished most of my goals, but God pulled in a few surprises. That’s the way He works and I’m grateful for another year. As I write my last journal entry for the 2007 tonight, I hope to see some growth. I’m looking forward to writing new goals for 2008.
Goals. Not resolutions. Goals are planned activities that I pray further my growth and me as a person. Definitely at the top of the list will be completing a final manuscript. That was one of my disappointments for ‘07. But when I look back, I’ve learned so much about writing. I’ve learned a lot from some of the best authors. In my opinion, these were the best books I read in 2007. The countdown will start with number ten.
Most of the novels are suspense thrillers because that’s my favorite genre to read. There are a few first time reads that stuck with me.
10. Finder’s Fee by Alton Gansky
I always like reading Alton’s plots. This one was cool!
9. Coral Moon by Brandilynn Collins
Brandilynn always nails it for me. This novel was the creepiest one I read from her.
8. Over Her Head by Shelley Bates
This was Women’s Fiction with suspense. My writing is tailored in this direction so I really admired how Shelley handled this story with grace and suspense. The protagonist made me mad a few times, probably because she reminded me of myself.
7. Crimson Eve by Brandilynn Collins
I know, didn’t I just mention her. Well, there was no dead body in the first chapter, but the pacing was awesome. More of a character driven story.
6. Doesn’t She Look Natural? by Angela Hunt
I’ve heard a lot about Angela and this was my first read. It won’t be my last. Author of over 100 books, she is a superb storyteller.
5. The Ex-Files by Victoria Christopher Murray
This author along with Sharon Ewell Foster were my first introductions to Christian Fiction. This book sat around for awhile as well, but once I picked it up – I went on an emotional roller coaster ride. I know I shed tears at least two or three times.
4. The Dead Whisper On by T.L. Hines
After reading Hines’ debut novel last year, I was looking forward to this book. It didn’t disappoint and I loved the female heroine. Very different!
3. The Watchers by Mark Andrew Olsen
This one sat in a stack for awhile, but once I picked it up, I was pleasantly surprised. Great storyline and I’m looking forward to the second book in this series in ‘08.
2. Try Dying by James Scott Bell
Love, love, love the protagonist and not just because his name is “Ty.” You can tell James is a movie buff. After reading this novel, I have a list of movies to check out as well as the next Ty Buchanan installment.
1. Fearless by Robin Parish
This maybe a surprising pick for people who don’t know me very well, but I loved reading comic books when I was younger. I’m into the Spiderman, X-men, Matrix, — all those superhero type movies. I really loved Relentless and the second book in this trilogy was on target. It also made me really mad. Man, when I read the ending of this book, my mouth fell open. I’m definitely looking to the final installment, Merciless, in Summer 2008.
Looking back over this list, it’s interesting that my top reads were by men. I’m leaning towards writing Women’s Fiction, so in 2008, I’m going to move out of my reading boundaries and read more Women’s Fiction and Chick Lit. Maybe I might even read a Historical Fiction novel. I don’t know, that could be pushing it for me. LOL!
Happy New Year!
