Doesn’t She Look Natural?
by Angela Hunt
Devastated by a divorce, Jennifer Graham and her two sons are living with her mother. The tension between mother and daughter has become strained as a result. When a distance relative leaves Jennifer a historic funeral home in Mt. Dora, Florida, she decides to take a road trip, hoping for a fresh start. With the boys and her mother in tow, she arrives to a mammoth house in dire need of repairs. Not knowing what to do, she decides to place the unlikely sale on the market anyway and invest funds from her recently sold home into fixing up Fairlawn.
In the midst of construction, the mortician who worked with her Uncle Ned, still keeps the funeral home in business. Eventually, Jennifer and her family become accustomed (sort of) to having a funeral home below their living quarters. Secretly, Jennifer is hoping once the funeral home is sold, her ex-husband will come to his senses and return to his family. But little does Jennifer know how much God has to teach her from the cold, sterile rooms beneath the Fairlawn Funeral Home.
This was my first read from Angela Hunt. Quite often, I like to check out her blog, A Life in Pages, so I’m aware she has written over a hundred books, including several well-known children’s books.
Doesn’t She Look Natural has to be one of the most original stories I’ve read in a long time. There’s one other book I’ve read in recent years about the family business being a funeral home, but Angela takes a unique spin with a woman becoming the owner of a business she knows nothing about.
While we may think of the business side of burying bodies, Angela reminds readers of the human side – the ministry that these final caretakers give to our deceased loves ones – in order to provide comfort for the living. I can’t tell you the ending because you need to read the book, but it was a revelation to my spirit. It’s the kind of ending that will stick with you no matter how many other books you read within a year.
This was the first book in the Fairlawn series and I’m looking forward to the second book, She Always Wore Red, which will be released May 2008.
