Writing can be a lonely activity. The loneliness may not necessary end after the book is published. Hours of travel, sitting at book signing tables, setting up booths, and hotel rooms may take a toil on a writer, may even steal some of the joy from the publishing process. With the current economy, authors have to be careful with funds. It’s imperative to include a combination of traditional and online ideas in book marketing plans.

With the Book Buzz 2.0 column, I try to share with you online marketing ideas to help you get your book out there to your readers. I also run a marketing blog, but there is no way I could share with you all the options that are available to you. What makes the Internet such an awesome place is the willingness of so many who don’t mind sharing tips. I’ve found the best teachers when it comes to marketing are those who are veterans or who have a creative spirit when it comes to book promotion.

Book Buzz 2.0 | Let the Buzz Begin

Some days you wrote feverishly, other days you stared at a blank page. After much procrastination and then finally a stroke of genius, you finished the story that’s haunted you months, maybe even years. You probably didn’t know at the time completing the manuscript was only the beginning. The journey to “getting the call” can be heart wrenching.

You may be one of the writers who receives the call not long after the submission process. Or you can be the one of thousands of writers (including some very famous published authors) who received one rejection letter after another. Either way, when you get the call, it will be joyous time. As you begin to settle back down to earth, don’t get caught up in the myth.

Book Buzz 2.0: Thinking Ahead

When writing a book, one may think it’s too soon to think about marketing. The impression I’ve been getting the past few years, it’s actually a very good idea to not only start thinking about book promotion, but to study the various avenues. Whether published traditionally or self-published, too many authors concentrate all their efforts on writing the book. That’s only half the process. The next half is selling the book.

I often receive emails from unpublished writers about whether it’s beneficial to have a web presence. Yes, if you want to sell books in the future. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have an established audience prior to the book contract. If anything, it may make you more appealing to a publisher who in all honesty is clearly looking for the dollar sign aspect of your book.

Family Literacy in the Digital Age

Books. From the time I was four years old, I can remember being enchanted with books. My mom gifted me with a membership in the I Can Read Book Club. I don’t remember how often the books were shipped, but I do remember reading them over and over again until I received a new shipment. The day I received a library card, you would have thought I struck gold. It’s a good thing the library was within walking distance, because I would carry stacks of books home and then pour over them for days, especially during the summer vacations. Over the past ten years, I have had the opportunity to build websites, animations and online games for K-12 students. It’s exciting and fun to build interactive components that are used in school districts across the country. There are certain safety measures to keep in mind whenever you create online products for children. Authors of children’s and young adult books share a similar responsibility when it comes to marketing to this unique audience. In this month’s column, I’m going to address some traditional forms of marketing as well as online routes.
