All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
One of my favorite television shows was UNWRAPPED on the Food Network. The show reveals the ingredients that are used to make some of our favorite foods – like cookies! In a similar way, God wants us to unwrap His word to find out what He has to reveal to us.
Through the years, my journals have become more and more of a bible study tool. Sometimes a verse or a word may pop off the pages at me. I can tell this is the work of the Holy Spirit because I am always led to reflect on my situation during that time. From 2005-2009, I wrote and stored my devotions and bible studies at CookieAisle.com.
Feel free to read some devotions and bible studies from my faith journey. From time to time I will feature them on my website OR add a new one.
Why should we study the bible?
In order to become a serious Christian, you must become involved in serious bible study. God has a message for us and we will not know what it is until we begin to study His Word. Just how important is Bible Study to you as a believer in Jesus Christ? Let’s let the Bible itself answer that question:
“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'” Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
Humans are made up of two major parts: PHYSICAL and SPIRITUAL. We know we need to eat food in order for our physical bodies to survive. We often forget we need to provide nourishment for our spirits as well. In order to live healthy spiritual lives we must feed on God’s Word.
If you have just accepted Christ recently you are considered a NEWBIE CHRISTIAN.
“…for you have been born again not of seed, which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God…’The word of the Lord abides forever’…like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation…” 1 Peter 1:23-2:2 NIV
A Christian’s goal should be to become a MATURE CHRISTIAN. This is a life-long process. The sign of a MATURE CHRISTIAN is there willingness to strengthen their faith and relationship with God. Bible study provides Christians with a weapon against the devil, encourage us and gives us strength to continue in this race. MATURE CHRISTIANS make it a point to prepare themselves for Jesus’ return through constant prayer, daily bible study, service in the church and community, witnessing and many other capacities that God can use individuals.
“…Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and KNOCKS they can immediately open the door for him…You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Luke 12: 35-36, 40 NIV
How do you choose a translation?
You definitely need a copy of God’s Word, the B-I-B-L-E. Most folks have the King James Version. While the language is beautiful, sometimes it might be helpful to get another translation.
There are a lot of translations. Go to a local bookstore and take the time to thumb through the pages. Read a few passages until you find one you feel comfortable with reading. You might like to have several different translations on hand.
You are probably asking how do I get into the habit of reading the bible regularly? Consider purchasing or finding a daily devotional book. Also find a daily bible reading plan that works for you. The best bible reading plans let you read from the Old and New Testament each day.
